Description

BOOK ONE IN THE BROKEN EMPIRE TRILOGY

“Prince of Thorns
deserves attention as the work of an iconoclast who seems determined to turn that familiar thing, Medievalesque Fantasy Trilogy, entirely on its head.”—Locus

When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. By the time he was thirteen, he was the leader of a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king...

It’s time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what’s rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar’s men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him—and he has nothing left to lose.

But treachery awaits him in his father’s castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

I was intrigued with the premise of this book, a fantasy novel featuring an anti-hero prince. I thought it would be an interesting departure from the normal good versus evil trope. And at first I really liked it. But halfway through this book and well into the second, I just became bored. I think the problem is that the main character is so selfish and single-minded, so prone to violence without much depth to him, he became a two-dimensional character. He is cunning and smart without any real reason why. And he is surrounded by so many other deplorable characters... his evil father, heartless stepmother, a band of degenerates.... it became too one note. None of the characters have depth, all cardboard players in a very thin plot and story. I started to not care about any of them. So I stopped reading the second book and regretted buying any of them.

There was no scale to the story. The main character would decide to go somewhere and then he was there. He would decide to do some impossible task and within a paragraph would have a solution. I won't remember this book next week nor will I finish the series.

If you like Stories about Dark, unlikable, heroes then Prince of Thorns is for you. Misery apon misery in a spiral of dispare that draws you from beginning to end hoping for a glimmer of redemption. Maybe I won’t find it in the next book but I have to find out.

The story has some amazing twists but more importantly you love the character. He's clever yet extremely bold. Even at the very end you'll think,"what is he going to do next". Amazing read

I can't believe these outstanding five star reviews. This book is terrible. It is the worst book I've ever listened to. The only reason I finished it is because I had it as an audio book. The main character is static and boring. It doesn't bother me that he is evil, but he's just too arrogant and cocky to relate to. There really isn't one believable character in this book. It's sad that crap like this gets published. What a waste of time and money. Do yourself a favor and read Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun. It's a first person tale written in way better prose.

Really fast read. Action and suspense rarely let up. One of the best books I have ever read.
